How the budget calculator (50/30/20) works
The 50/30/20 rule splits your net income: 50 % to needs, 30 % to wants and 20 % to saving and investing.
How to read the result. The monthly saving is what's left after needs and wants. The savings rate is that saving over your income: the metric that most drives financial independence. The table compares your actual split with the 50/30/20 target.
Worked example (default values). You earn €2,000 net, spend €1,000 on needs and €600 on wants:
- Saving: 2,000 − 1,000 − 600 = €400/month, that is €4,800/year.
- Your split: 50 % needs, 30 % wants, 20 % savings: right on the rule's target.
An important note. 50/30/20 is a guide: in expensive cities needs exceed 50 %. What matters is a positive, growing savings rate.
