How the payroll income-tax withholding calculator works

Income-tax withholding is a prepayment your employer hands to the tax office each month on your behalf. It's reconciled in your annual return: over-withheld and you get a refund, under-withheld and you pay. The calculator tailors the withholding to your personal and family situation (contract type, age, children, ascendants, disability, joint taxation and pension contributions), which lower it through the personal and family minimum.

How to read the result. The withholding rate is the share of your gross prepaid. The withholding per payment is that amount in euros.

Worked example (default values). €30,000 gross over 14 payments, open-ended contract, single, age 30, no children:

  • Withholding rate: 16.4 %.
  • Withholding per payment: about €352 → net per payment €1,652.
  • Annual withholding: €4,926.

Raise the salary and the rate rises, because income tax is progressive; add children or a pension contribution and it falls.

An important note. It approximates the tax agency's withholding algorithm using the state + supplementary regional scale. The real figure may differ depending on your region. Not tax advice.
